C169 --- $SOLD --- this is the orientation view --- more pics down below
diameter: 9 1/2
height: 2 1/2
finish: one application of natural stain then 3 coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker)
WOODS USED: [SEE DISCUSSION ON THE MAIN PAGE OF THIS SITE IF ANY OF THIS IS UNCLEAR]
base: fairly light-colored panga panga
views 1 and 5: siam rosewood, lacewood, canary, BOX
views 2, 4, 6, 8: curly maple over curly maple
views 3 and 7: silky oak, paela, yellowheart, wenge, BOX
BOX: lacewood, cocobolo, sycamore. Both the lacewood and the sycamore are highly representative of the typical "look" of the respective woods, with their ray flakes being neither too large nor too small, but as Goldilocks would have it, just right.
flaws/issues: none
comments: I normally avoid symmetry in the bowls but for this one I made it deliberately symmetrical with the exception of the BOX which I made deliberately assymmetrical to show off the lacewood and sycamore combination. I'm very please with how it all turned out.
The yellowheart in views 3 and 7 is nicely chatoyant on the upper surface due to ray flakes (of which there are none on the bottom surface).
The lacewood in the BOX is face grain and that in views 1 and 5 are edge grain and the contrast is interesting. If you didn't know it, you probably would not think they were the same wood even though the color is obviously identical.
