C135 --- $SOLD --- this is the orientation view --- more pics down below

diameter: 9"
height: 3"

finish: an application of natural stain and then 3 coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker)

WOODS USED: [SEE DISCUSSION ON THE MAIN PAGE OF THIS SITE IF ANY OF THIS IS UNCLEAR]

A NOTE ABOUT THE PAELA IN THIS BOWL: It is common for paela to take a strong color change with exposure to light but it only goes about 1/8th of an inch into the surface. The paela in this bowl, expecially the piece in view 3 had a VERY strong patina, thus the much deeper orange/red near the edges versus the lighter orange in the middle.

base: from the top: thick birch veneer, very thin aromatic red cedar (see "issues" below), then oak over a lamination that shows spio in views 1 and 5 and misc in views 3 and 7. See "comments" below.

view 1: cocobolo, sipo, bocote, BOX

view 3: paela, sapele?, BOX

view 5: paela over walnut veneer over redheart (with sapwood on top), purpleheart, bocote, BOX

view 7: yellowheart over thick mahogany veneer over oak thin over aromatic red cedar thin over padauk veneer over aromatic red cedar thin over ? thin over sycamore over padauk veneer over oak thin over aromatic red cedar over padauk veneer over aromatice red cedar over sycamore over aromatic red cedar. All of that sided by bubinga over bocote over hard maple veneer over afrormosia and ALL of the precceding over purpleheart. All of that backed by thick oak veneer then 2 layers of cherry veneer then thick oak veneer then Peruvian walnut, hard maple veneer. All preceeding sided by redheart

BOX: left to right: redheart, paela, zircote, tatajuba, zircote, hard maple veneer, bocote, cowtree

flaws/issues: There was a thin layer of aromatic red cedar under the box and it turned off unevenly so that some of it remains (especially around view 4) but most of it is gone. What remains under the box is thick birch plywood.

comments: This is the first bowl to use this particular form of laminated base (below the oak) and while the sipo came out very nice, I am not thrilled with the rest of it. OTHER than that this is definitely one of my better bowls --- the shape is very pleasing, it has a nice heft to it (the walls are fairly thick, which is common on my bowls but this one is thicker than usual) and the woods are very nice.

Beautiful colors throughout this one.

The purpleheart in view 5 is spectacular, especially on the bottom (too bad I didn't put it the other way 'round) where it is full of ray flakes and marvelously chatoyant. Compare this to the purpleheart on the bottom of view 7 which is just standard grainy purpleheart with nice purple color but no flakes and no chatoyancy.

view 8a --- there is no extra charge for the dog hair at the front of the bowl, which I cleverly brushed off AFTER I had taken the pic
