height: 2 1/4"

finish: one application of natural stain and then 2 coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker)

WOODS USED: [SEE DISCUSSION ON THE MAIN PAGE OF THIS SITE IF ANY OF THIS IS UNCLEAR]

base: canarywood

view 1: paela, ebony veneer, mahogany, BOX

view 2: canary

view 3: aromatic red cedar, aromatic red cedar, machiche, purpleheart, machiche, mahogany, canary (so dark that at first I thought it was mahogany, but check out the red steak on the bottom), BOX

view 4: sen (looking into a quartersawn view), narra over cocobolo over Honduras rosewood (with very typical tight purple grain lines --- this is a slow-growning tree), BOX

view 5: aromatic red cedar, canary, canary, hard maple, BOX

view 6: mahogany, grenadilla over ash (the grenadilla looks a lot like walnut)

view 7: padauk, cocobolo (with sapwood on the bottom), wenge, BOX

view 8: canary

BOX: pairs from the bottom up: yellowheart, padauk, macassar ebony, yellowheart, padauk, hard maple veneer, purpleheart, yellowheart, wenge, padauk

flaws/issues: A very minor issue is that one corner of the box, on the bottom, was covered with birch veneer which did not get turned all the way off and so has left a thin translucent layer that would have been better off on the shop floor but didn't quite get there.

LATER NOTE: there has been some movement in service and now there is a separation along the top of the box. It is quite obvious both visually and to the touch. There is also a very thin separation along the right side of the box --- that one is hardly visible but is noticeable to the touch (especially if you run your fingernail over the surface) on the top and even more so on the bottom. These are unfortunate but don't really detract from the beauty of the bowl. Nonetheless, I've reduce the price because of them from (prices removed after sale).

comments: The ebony veneer in view 1 really sets off the paela nicely. The box is one of several elaborate angled sections that I made --- I like them but they are a real bear to glue up because of the angles, so I don't know if I'll do any more of them.

The canarywood base (enlarged below in view 1b) looks particularly nice --- this is the first one I've done but I'm sure I'll do more.
