G18 --- $160.00 --- this is the orientation view --- more pics down below

diameter: 8"
height: 5 3/4"

finish: one application of natural stain then 3 coats of high gloss spar polyurethane (with UV blocker)

WOODS USED: [SEE DISCUSSION ON THE MAIN PAGE OF THIS SITE IF ANY OF THIS IS UNCLEAR]

base: upper section is Honduras mahogany and the lower sections are:
view 1: oxhorn, canary, tulip poplar
view 2: redheart
view 3: Peruvian walnut, paela
view 4: sapele(?)
view 5: cypress, aromatic red cedar, tulip poplar
view 6: sapele(?)
view 7: Peruvian walnut, paela
view 8: redheart

center: 4 center sections of Honduras mahogany and 8 outer wedges (in 4 pairs) of okoume

view 1: in the center is cocobolo over cypress sided by makore (butt end) and all backed by birch. To each side of that is makore (face grain) and then it is all backed by aromatic red cedar and then topped by aromatic red cedar.

view 3: badi backed by prima vera with blue stain

view 5: in the middle are 4 pieces of sapele split by two pieces of basswood. To the left of that is a slant of wenge and in the upper left corner is osage orange. On top is cowtree and the upper right slant is ? (reddish brown wood with ray flakes). All of that is backed by padauk veneer, birch, aromatic red cedar. On each side are canary over partridgewood.

view 7: zircote, imbuia, aromatic red cedar

flaws/issues: The Peruvian walnut in view 7 of the base has an internal crack that was not apparent until the piece was turned. Unlike my normal protestations about how such things are sometimes "character", I have to say, this one is just a plain damn flaw in the wood and no getting around it.

comments: Note the 3 large omega curves on the inside of the bowl.

When I built up the blank, I really liked how I put the cococbol in view 1 at a slant, but I like it less in the final result than I had expected. Ah well, just another example of my never ending attempts to avoid too much symmetry.

The base on this one seems particularly nice, with all of the colorful little half-ovals.

The badi in view 3 is nicely chatoyant as are several other woods in this bowl
