view 3: red oak, chechem, yellowheart, flaky purpleheart, BOX
view 5: aromatic red cedar, afrormosia?, mahogany, aromatic red cedar, BOX
view 7: machiche, obeche, sapele, BOX
BOX: The slanted wood in the upper left is yellowheart, ? (brown), bocote, aromatic red cedar, bloodwood. The vertical pieces are, from the left: yellowheart, bocote, aromatic red cedar, paela
flaws/issues: there is a very small gum inclusion in the machiche in view 7. The oak in the base appears "dirty" in a few places --- probably mineral stain.
comments: The purpleheart in view 3 is wonderfully chatoyant due to ray flakes --- I don't see that condition much in purpleheart. The woods in view 1 are all outstanding and the machiche in view 7 is near-perfect for the species (it does have a tiny gum inclusion). The chechem in view 3 is also excellent. The aromatic red cedar in view 6 (the inner piece next to the BOX) has some sapwood on the end next to the chechem and instead of the normal off-white of the sapwood for this species, it's gray with a bluish tint. That's because it has "blue stain" which you can read about in my exotic web site.
I'm not crazy about the lamination in the base, and the mineral stain in the base is unfortunate, but other than that, this is definitely one of my better bowls with a very pleasant contour, nice solid feel, and excellent wood throughout.
